I don’t watch award shows. (confession, I don’t even watch television often…) However, one of my favorite things to look at online afterwards are the photos from the red carpet.
(warning – this post is looking girl-y. Just fyi for the fellows who don’t care at all about fashion… It also may be, according to some folks’ standards, immodest.)

So, in keeping with my resolution to have fun while blogging, I’d like to highlight some of my favorite SAG Awards looks from yesterday.

For once in my life, I actually like Tina Fey’s dress/outfit. She’s normally wearing black, so this is an enormous improvement. Love the dress, it’s gorgeous on her.
For some reason, I really really liked this look. Maybe it’s her hair, contrasting with the deep red of the dress. And the dress brightens her complexion, which is an added plus (Mila Kunis). I feel like this is elegant, but young enough not to drag her down. Anyhow…
I’ve never heard of Julia Stiles before, however – her dress? Lovely. It was probably the most understatedly elegant dress there. (is understatedly a word? Google Chrome is telling me it’s not, but I think it should be. take that, Mr. internet-browser-with-spell-check…)
Okay… it’s a bit – loud. But I love Hailee Steinfeld’s funky sense of style. Only she could pull this one off, and pull it off she did. It was fabulous to see a teen who was dressed her age. Love that…
Thank you, Claire Danes, for being cool enough to put a belt with a patterned dress… enough said. :)
Other notable looks that I’d rather not post here, just because of extraordinarily low necklines *cough* were Lea Michele’s and Sophia Vergara’s. Immodest, but gorgeous.
Fails? January Jones and Nicole Kidman… Horrible.
Surprises? Helena Bonham Carter didn’t show up with two different shoes on… I was kind of looking forward to that. :)
If you’re a fellow red-carpet onlooker, what did you think? If you’re not, and you enjoyed looking at these highlights, which one was your favorite?

(the pictures aren’t mine, you can click on them to go to where I obtained them from. SAG stands for Screen Actors Guild)

cold as ice1
It has been lovely the past few days.
cold as ice2
We have a few inches of snow on the ground, but nothing we can’t manage.
(When I say manage, I’m talking about anything less than a foot… We aren’t quite northerners, you know… In fact, people here freak out at the littlest mention of snow…)
cold as ice4

Not only has it been lovely, temperature-wise, but it’s also been extraordinarily beautiful outdoors. Given the cold, I can now fully appreciate spring. Isn’t that funny, how, after each season, with faults and beauty unique to each, you come to appreciate the next one even more?
(Of course, if you live where there aren’t four seasons… well, I’ll send some snow, or alternatively, sunshine your way.)

What event(s) in your life make you grateful for change?

I’ve seen this lovely, creative challenge circling the blog world, and finally decided to hop on the bandwagon. (Thanks Leanna!)
The first 5 people to comment will receive something handmade from me in the mail. I’m not going to tell you exactly what I’ll be sending, but yes, you will love it.
(That is – I hope you will. I don’t have the insanely awesome power of reading minds…)
However, in order to do this, you must do the same thing on your blog. (Don’t you love when there’s a catch? Don’t stress – it’ll just make you be more creative.)
So yes, the first five people to comment will be added to this list.
04:: Kendra
05:: Anna

As soon as you have commented and have the challenge posted on your blog, shoot me an email with your name and address, and I’ll send the packages out within the next couple of weeks. Provided, of course, that we don’t get snowed in… :) We already have several inches on the ground. (More on that later…)

Cows Can’t Jump by Dave Reisman. When I was contacted by Jumping Cow Press to review this children’s book, you have absolutely no idea how excited I was. I mean, look at the title… and the cover… and the little cow…
Before I melt into a puddle because of the overwhelming adorableness radiating from this book, let me tell you a bit more about it.

Cows Can’t Jump is a fully illustrated, forty-four page book for young readers. It is also a fantastic book to read aloud to an even younger child. The book introduces many useful verbs (stampede, fly, wallow, among many others). It also introduces many different animals – lizards, bats, sloths, in an innovative and positive environment. As you can see from the title, the book talks about things that different animals can’t do. However, for every single can’t, there is also a can.

“Cows can’t jump…. but they can swim…. Gorillas can’t swim… but they can swing…”
The back cover states that the book “builds self-esteem and teaches respect and humility…” This is absolutely, positively true. It shows to young readers that although they can’t do some things, they can do others, and that they should be proud of what they can do, and that they should also respect what others can do. This is so, so, so important for kids to realize, and I love how this book promotes that indirectly.
The best part about the book though (for me), would have to be the illustrations by Jason Maas.Go here to see more pages from the book. The animals are all so precious and innocent – perfect for a young child to look at. (Think reading aloud at bedtime…). Some of the illustrations are hilarious as well (the expressions on the animals’ faces – priceless).
This book makes me happy. :) Very, very happy. However, I would have to contest one point – some cows can jump. Especially when they’re bratty, and they want to run away. (I’ve chased many-a-cow that popped over the fence at a weak point…) Moving on…
Altogether, this book is quickly becoming one of my favorite children’s books. This could easily become a family bedtime tradition, and would also make a fabulous gift for a family with kids.
Jumping Cow Press was kind enough to send me two copies of Cows Can’t Jump. Because I am a child at heart, I’m keeping one of them. However, I also want to offer you all the chance to win a softcover, autographed copy of Cows Can’t Jump! You must leave a separate comment for each entry.

I know, I know – this is my second post today. But the other one was a giveaway announcement, so it doesn’t count. ;)
I wanted, very quickly, to share an article I wrote that was published on trifter.com today. I’ve wanted to write something on this event (the shooting in Tuscon two weeks ago), and finally found the words to write it…
The shooting in Tuscon, Arizona. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you most likely know about the event and what took place. If you know of that, then you also know about the miracle that is Gabrielle Giffords, the United States Representative who was shot through the head – and is still alive. Not only is she alive, but her recovery so far is absolutely astounding. In her most recent move from the hospital in Arizona to the rehabilitation center in Texas, Giffords teared up and smiled when hearing the cheers of the crowd outside. Overnight, she rocketed from being a politician to being a hero in the hearts of many. Why?…
