Poetry on Proverbs 1:8-9

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction; don’t neglect your mother’s teaching; for they are a graceful wreath on your head, and beads for your neck” Proverbs 1:8-9

Young, free,
you can’t tell me.

We burst out of our families’ bosoms
at eighteen, ready
to to take on the world.

They tried to tell us,
some wisdom,
some foolishness.
But all the same

they tried to tell us.

Perhaps we thought
“Honor thy mother and father!”
meant obedience.

Maybe, as we grow up
we find it didn’t matter what
they said
…they won’t remember

but what mattered
what we both
remember?

is that we took time to listen.
