About Amanda

Where do you live? I live on the East Coast of the United States, somewhere between where saying “ya’ll” is normal and where “ya’ll” is how “Southerners talk”.
What school do you go to? I am homeschooled, actually. I go to an online high school, so I have teachers, classmates, and tons of papers to write, but I don’t have to go anywhere. It’s pretty cool, actually.
How old are you? 16.
What do you want to do when you grow up? I want to go into journalism – that’s my career of choice. Now the “fun” stuff – college hunting.
Pets? A cat – Opal. A rabbit – Peter. A dog – Lady. The first two live in my room… together. Fun? Yes.
Hobbies? Graphic design, coding, writing, piano, and some crafty stuff. Generally, you can find me on the computer, brainstorming something brilliant for a website. I’m such a nerd.

What’s your farm like? It’s large, but not huge. In the summer, we run a CSA, and all-year-round, we produce free-range eggs, and pastured/grassfed/natural beef, chicken, and pork. Hopefully expanding into lamb sometime soon.
Do you work on the farm a lot? Not as much as you might think, although that changes in the summer. Typically, I have my chores in the evenings, and wash/pack eggs. In the summer, I help get ready for CSA/vegetable pickup, and run one pickup site.
Do you like working on the farm? Sometimes. In general, it’s pretty cool, even though it’s a lot of work.

About Farmgirl Writes

Did you design the site yourself? Yes. I told you I was a nerd, didn’t I? Truth is – I love web design. Even if it frustrates me sometimes.
What programs did you use? For the graphics, I use GIMP. Seriously – it’s free, and it’s just as good as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. This site is done using WordPress.org. You can do so much with the program! I used to use Blogger, but this is so much better, in my opinion. Not that I’m dissing Blogger – it’s a great platform for those who are just starting out blogging. I’d recommend starting with Blogger before going with anything more complicated, so that you can start attracting an audience and work on your blogging skills. For hosting, I use Hostgator.com. They have awesome customer service, and offer quite a bit.
So, you started on Blogger? Yes – I was on Blogger from April 2010 through January 20110. It’s fantastically customizable, and very easy to use. However, I believe that the WordPress platform offers more for experienced bloggers who want complete control over their site.
Why did you start blogging? I started blogging in order to have a medium to share my thoughts and ideas, as well as my experiences on the farm.
Why do you blog in different categories? To put it simply, I have many different interests. I love being able to post about each of them, and categories are easier to read, in terms of separating one interest from the other.
I heard that you do custom blog designs? Yes and no. I used to offer them as a business (CS Designs), but now, I prefer to work on a project if I’m interested in it. So yes, email me.
You do design for free though, right? Nope, please see my web design page.
And the other one percent? Some extremely complicated situations require tons of work, so I reserve the right to ask for a tip if I solve your problem. 😉

What camera do you have? A Nikon Coolpix L22. Not a DSLR, but hey, it works. Besides, with practice, you can get amazing stuff out of a point-and-shoot.
What editing software do you use? For a short time (read, trial period time), I used Adobe Lightroom. Man – if only I had a spare couple hundred dollars lying around… I use GIMP and Picnik.com regularly.
